The hook is two messages, not one
The first message poses something; the second complicates it. One line alone is a statement, and statements are easy to scroll past.
Four openings that work
An accusation with no context. A question the other person clearly does not want to answer. A confession that arrives too early. A short reply that obviously hides something.
Test by deleting
Cut the first message. If the story still makes sense, it was setup, not a hook. Keep cutting until removing a line actually breaks something.
